A public letter authored by Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja has praised Olatunji Bello, Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), for what it describes as “responsive and exemplary public service.” The letter, titled “An Open Letter to Olatunji Bello: A Beacon of Hope and the Definition of a True Public Servant,” commended Bello’s years-long reputation for effectiveness and accessibility in government.
Dr. Jaja, writing in his capacity, noted that Bello’s public service legacy dates as far back as 2006, when he approved the review of Lagos State’s environmental laws while serving as Commissioner for Environment. That effort, led legally by a team under Prof. Oyewole Oyewo, SAN, earned commendation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). “You entered the Hall of Fame of responsive public officials who personally respond to emails and WhatsApp messages from Nigerian citizens,” Jaja wrote, adding that such accessibility is rare and commendable in the public sector.
The letter further highlights Bello’s varied background as a lawyer, journalist, environmentalist, and political scientist, and praises his transition into the role of FCCPC CEO, which he assumed in June 2024. According to Jaja, Nigerians must begin to recognize and celebrate public officials whose conduct and performance exceed expectations, not just criticize those who fall short. “We must also celebrate public officials whose performance is above average,” he stated, urging Bello to maintain his current style of governance.
