The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Johnson Adenola, has underscored the importance of capacity building for police officers to tackle the increasing sophisticated security challeges in Nigeria.
Adenola stated this on Wednesday in Ibadan when declaring open a three-day seminar with the theme: “Building Capacity for Effective Superintending”.
The training was organised by the Oyo State Police Command in partnership with Fimihan Adeoye Security Consult for Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders in the state.
Adenola said that the force must prioritise investment in its personnel in order to achieve its constitutional mandate of protecting and serving the citizens.
“In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, where crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated and public expectations are higher than ever, capacity building is not a luxury, but a necessity,” he said.
The CP said that police and other security agencies in Nigeria would perform optimally with better knowledge.
He said that an unupdated knowledge would remain outdated, adding that improved police training would enhance professionalism and service delivery.
Adenola said that the three-day training marks a significant milestone in the command’s journey towards policing excellence.
“This initiative underscores the commitment of the police administration under the leadership of IGP. Kayode Egbetokun, to professionalism, innovation, and community policing.
“It demonstrates our resolve to stay ahead of the curve, leveraging expertise from FASE Security Consultancy Training to enhance our capabilities,” he said.
In his remarks, the resource person at the event, Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Olafimihan Adeoye, said the participants would be taught on 11 carefully selected topics.
Adeoye listed the topics to include statutory police duties, judicious use of force and firearms, principles of proportionality and accountability, inter-agency synergy among others.
Speaking to newsmen, one of the participants at the training, CSP Adewale Osifeso, said the training would be of immense benefit to them.
Osifeso, who is the command’s spokesman, said the training taught them on mordern ways of handling firearms and tackling the emerging security challeges in the state and Nigeria in general.
