The Benue State Police Command has brought together political party leaders, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders to sign a peace accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Peter Orchia, said in a statement on Wednesday that state chairmen of political parties, candidates and representatives of sister security and law enforcement agencies participated in the exercise.
The stakeholders pledged to promote peaceful campaigns, respect the rule of law and protect lives and property throughout the electoral period. The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, urged political leaders and candidates to ensure their supporters conducted themselves peacefully and responsibly.
Nwadiogbu warned political actors against recruiting or using political thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities. He said such actions could undermine peace and security during the electoral process.
The participating parties and candidates subsequently signed the Peace Accord, committing themselves to rejecting violence, respecting other political actors and cooperating with security agencies. Nwadiogbu assured them that the command would remain professional and impartial while providing security for lawful political activities, and urged stakeholders to maintain communication with security agencies concerning rallies, campaigns and other major events.
