Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have arrested a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Onoja Samuel, following a public disturbance and shooting incident at a local market in the Kubwa area of Abuja.
The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon, October 26, 2026, when the Kubwa Police Division received a distress call at approximately 1:50 p.m. regarding an armed individual firing sporadic shots into the air amid a tense confrontation with local traders.
Police operatives deployed to the scene promptly disarmed and apprehended Samuel, recovering a CZ pistol alongside 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from his possession. Providing context to the altercation, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, issued an official statement on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, confirming the suspect’s arrest and detailing the preliminary findings of the investigation.
SP Adeh stated that Samuel had gone to the market armed with a pistol after receiving reports that some traders had physically assaulted his wife, leading to a heated verbal dispute during which he discharged his firearm into the air. SP Adeh confirmed that the officer remains in police custody and will face formal charges in court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
Addressing the fallout from the shooting, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged personnel from all sister security agencies operating within the territory to exercise utmost restraint and adhere strictly to standard operational protocols.
CP Sanusi emphasized that security officers intending to conduct official activities must notify the respective divisional police headquarters in their target areas beforehand to prevent inter-agency misunderstandings and safeguard public peace. The Command further advised residents to report any security concerns or suspicious activities through its dedicated emergency hotlines.
