The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to rename the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, as the T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, Wukari in honour of former Minister of Defence and retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma.
The resolution was reached following the unanimous adoption of a motion during plenary at the House of Representatives Chamber inside the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. Jointly sponsored by Rep. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, Rep. Mark Useni, and Rep. Ayuba Zaku Dampar, the motion was formally seconded by Rep. Bamidele Salam.
Leading the debate on behalf of his co-sponsors, Rep. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi recounted that the institution was established in 2011 to expand access to tertiary education, foster research, and accelerate national development.
He emphasized that Gen. Danjuma’s legendary military record, public service career, and extensive philanthropic contributions to education, health, and humanitarian causes across Nigeria make him highly deserving of the honor.
According to Gbefwi, immortalising the elder statesman through the institution would preserve his legacy of leadership and public service for generations to come. Presiding over the plenary session, Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen commended the lawmakers for the initiative, describing it as an appropriate tribute to a respected national leader and mentor.
The Speaker expressed confidence that the executive arm of government would act on the recommendation to reflect Danjuma’s immense selflessness and service to the nation.
To give legal effect to the proposal, the House mandated its Committee on University Education to collaborate with key educational stakeholders and initiate the necessary legislative processes to amend the university’s enabling Act.
