In a probable last ditch to contain the crisis within his party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State, on Tuesday, warned members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) that they would regret leaving the party at the end of the day.

Kwankwaso, National Leader of the party, told a horde of party supporters who converged on his residence in Kano, against the backdrop of reports that some top NNPP members, including Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, were considering leaving the party, that such a move would amount to betrayal.

Expressing happiness at the number of the party faithful at the gathering the former governor, said: “What I am seeing is even beyond what I expected because I am aware that few, very few of you have decided to cross to the other side. Don’t worry, whoever knows them should advise them. I want to remind those who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded.”

Kwankwaso also pointed to the large turnout of supporters at the meeting as evidence that the NNPP retains strong grassroots backing across Kano State, despite moves by some political figures to align elsewhere.

“I’m very glad with the turnout today because I didn’t expect to see so many faces here. I thought they would follow the governor’s camp.”

He stressed that the strength of the NNPP lies in its loyal base rather than the actions of a few defectors, urging supporters to remain steadfast and focused on the party’s ideals.
