One person has been confirmed dead and three adult males were rescued alive following the collapse of an under-construction two-storey building in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, when the structure suddenly gave way, trapping several construction workers beneath the rubble.

Following a distress call, emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), were immediately dispatched to the scene in Fadeyi to activate search and rescue operations.

Rescue teams successfully extricated three adult males alive from the debris. Paramedics from LASAMBUS administered first aid on-site before transporting the injured survivors to a nearby hospital for comprehensive medical treatment. However, during the search operation, the lifeless body of an adult male worker was recovered from under the collapsed structure.

Confirming the casualties, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that prompt emergency intervention prevented further loss of life.

”Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, trapping workers under the rubble. Through a coordinated search and rescue effort, three adult males were extricated alive and given immediate pre-hospital care, while one adult male was unfortunately recovered dead.”

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized the necessity for developers and site managers to strictly adhere to building safety standards, hire certified structural engineers, and avoid non-compliant construction practices. He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to investigating the root causes of structural failures across the state.

The collapse site has been cordoned off by law enforcement and safety officials to prevent unauthorised access and protect neighboring properties during clearing operations.

Regulatory agencies, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), are conducting preliminary investigations into the structural integrity and approval status of the building.
