Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, embarks on this ambitious 11-day tour of Africa. His presence in Cameroon is particularly significant given the region’s ongoing internal conflicts.
​The Pope arrived in North Africa (Algeria) earlier this week and has since moved into Central Africa. His itinerary includes Algeria,  Focused on interfaith dialogue in a Muslim-majority nation.
Cameroon His current stop, where he is addressing both corruption and the nearly decade-long separatist “Anglophone crisis.” And Upcoming Stops, The tour will continue to Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
The scale of this visit is enormous. On April 17, the Pope led a massive open-air Mass in
Douala, Cameroon’s economic hub. An estimated 600,000 people gathered at the Japoma Stadium area. The atmosphere was described as one of “deliverance,” as the Pope called for the nation to become “architects of peace”.
​Pope Leo XIV’s rhetoric has been remarkably bold during this trip. In a speech in Bamenda, he made headlines with several sharp critiques. He condemned the “handful of tyrants” who spend billions on warfare while ignoring the resources needed for healing, education, and restoration.
He issued a “woe” to those who use the name of God to justify military and political gain, stating they drag the sacred into “darkness and filth.”
These comments are widely seen as part of an escalating war of words with the White House. Following the Pope’s criticism of the
U.S.-Israel war on Iran, President Trump recently labeled him “weak on crime” and a “politician,” to which the Pope responded that he is simply fulfilling his role to promote peace.
​Pope stated “The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild.”
This tour marks a clear shift in his papacy, positioning the African continent as a top priority for the Church’s future and establishing himself as a vocal critic of global military spending.
