French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that the government will enforce new, targeted curfews where needed across the country after nationwide demonstrations over the weekend degenerated into severe riots and looting.

The crackdown follows some of the worst urban violence France has seen in recent years. Weeks of high school student demonstrations over learning conditions escalated on Saturday, October 17, into widespread disorder when more than 500,000 people took to the streets nationwide, far exceeding intelligence forecasts of 200,000.

Speaking from the Ministry of the Interior in Paris following an emergency cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Lecornu emphasized that while a national state of emergency remains an option, “local and partial” curfews are the most effective tool to restore public order.

”These curfews must be local and partial. It is out of the question to put all of Paris under curfew, but we are fully resolved to restoring public order.” Sébastien Lecornu reiterated.

Lecornu confirmed that initial curfews implemented on Monday evening in key locations, including select districts of Paris, Bordeaux, and Nice, helped keep the night relatively calm.

Under the latest directives issued to regional prefects, A targeted curfew for minors is set to take effect from Tuesday evening through at least Friday in high-risk districts. Security forces arrested an ultra-left activist on Tuesday morning in connection with the arson that destroyed the city’s historic 19th-century Town Hall.

More than 350 arrests were made overnight into Monday following the looting of roughly 30 businesses. The entrance to the Louvre Museum was briefly blocked by demonstrators over the weekend.

The rapid deterioration of public safety has triggered intense criticism across the political spectrum.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez publicly admitted to significant planning and intelligence miscalculations. Speaking on France Inter radio, Nuñez acknowledged a “lack of anticipation” that left law enforcement overwhelmed in several major cities.

Although Nuñez offered his resignation over the weekend, President Emmanuel Macron rejected it, instructing the minister to overhaul policing tactics and ensure full transparency regarding security lapses. President Macron is currently traveling in the Gulf region (including Kuwait and the UAE) to secure energy supplies amid mounting economic pressures.

With France just six months away from its next presidential election, the unrest has drawn international alarm, Governments in the United States, China, Germany, and across Europe issued travel warnings advising citizens in France to avoid public gatherings and protest venues.

Prime Minister Lecornu announced that temporary furlough schemes (activité partielle) will be available starting Tuesday for businesses affected by rioting and damage.

Officials confirmed that public events, including Tuesday evening’s UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona at the Parc des Princes, will proceed as scheduled under heightened security.
