Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has launched a fresh critique of President Bola Tinubu’s economic stewardship, declaring that the administration’s signature “Renewed Hope Agenda” has effectively devolved into “renewed hopelessness” for millions of ordinary citizens.
Speaking on Sunday evening during an extended television appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics in Abuja, the former Anambra State governor argued that three years of aggressive market reforms marked by subsidy removals and currency floatation have delivered mounting hardship rather than the promised revival.
Obi dismissed claims that his economic framework mirrors the incumbent administration’s focus on long-term structural adjustment, insisting that reform without immediate public relief is unsustainable.
”No, no — that’s renewed hopelessness. It’s not working,” Obi declared. “The kind of hope I’ll bring is real hope — tangible hope that people will see and feel.”
Obi highlighted that high inflation, rising energy tariffs, and the devaluation of the naira have crippled small businesses and reduced household spending capacity across Nigeria.
Calling on President Tinubu to engage directly with citizens rather than relying on press statements from presidential aides, Obi insisted that real leadership requires direct transparency during times of national crisis.
The NDC standard-bearer emphasized that any genuine recovery plan must prioritize national production, agricultural development, and fiscal discipline over political slogans and public sector borrowing.
