Federal lawmakers will remain away from floor debates for an extra two weeks after the National Assembly extended its recess, shifting the resumption date for both chambers from Tuesday, September 15, to Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
​The directive came directly from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. In an official statement that was released on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, explained that the extension was necessary to allow engineering crews enough time to finish complex infrastructure upgrades inside both main chambers.
​The physical overhaul follows months of technical headaches. Since moving back into the main chambers, lawmakers have experienced repeated breakdowns in audio equipment, dead microphones, and failures in the electronic voting system.
Senate President Akpabio previously criticized the situation as unacceptable, warning contractors that lingering equipment glitches would not be tolerated.
​While full plenary sessions remain on hold until September 29, legislative committees and administrative offices will continue operating at the complex to process pending business.
