The Rivers State Police Command has detained several officers, including an alleged shooter, following the fatal shooting of a motorist in Port Harcourt.

The Command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Blessing Agabe, disclosed this during a press briefing with journalists in Port Harcourt on Friday, August 28, 2026.

According to Agabe, the incident occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when an altercation broke out between police officers and the victim, identified as 22-year-old Anthony Obodo.

“Preliminary information indicates that an altercation occurred between the occupant and the officers, leading to a scuffle and subsequent gunshot,” Agabe stated.

The discharge killed Obodo and left two passers-by injured. The police spokesperson identified the primary officer involved as Corporal Alfred Louis.

Following the gunfire, an angry mob attacked and assaulted Louis, inflicting multiple injuries before order could be restored. He is currently receiving medical attention while under guard.

Louis and members of his operational team have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt while a full investigation proceeds.

“The command will not shield any officer engaging in unethical and unlawful conduct that brings the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute,” Agabe added, emphasizing that the command is committed to a transparent process and appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law.

The incident sparked widespread protests across parts of Port Harcourt on Friday. Additional police operatives have been deployed throughout the affected areas to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
