The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has condemned the prolonged environmental degradation and developmental neglect of the Odidi Federated Community in Warri South-West, Delta State.
This was contained in a statement by its chairman, Comrade Nicholas Igarama, which a copy of it was sent to newsmen on Thursday.
“We are alarmed by reports that a crude oil spill in Odidi, located within OML 42, has persisted for months, contaminating waterways and farmlands, destroying aquatic life and crippling fishing and farming livelihoods,” the Council stated.
The IYC said it is unacceptable for a community that has hosted oil production for decades to continue to suffer.
“It is unacceptable for Odidi, which has contributed immensely to the national economy for generations, to bear the environmental risks while enjoying little benefit. Six months of pollution without cleanup is too long and deeply disturbing,” it said.
On its demands, the Council called for urgent action from regulators and operators.
“We demand immediate containment, comprehensive cleanup and remediation, independent assessment of damage, and fair compensation for affected persons. NOSDRA must publish findings of Joint Investigation Visits, and NUPRC must disclose the status of the Host Community Development Trust for Odidi under the Petroleum Industry Act,” the statement read.
The Council stressed that its position is for justice and lasting peace.
“Our demand is about justice, not confrontation. Lasting peace in the Niger Delta must be built on environmental accountability, economic inclusion and visible development,” it added, calling for an urgent stakeholder meeting with the Federal and Delta State Governments, regulators, operators and the host community.
