The Lagos State Police Command has disarmed and detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a fatal shooting incident that resulted in the death of a young girl, Omole Taiwo, and left another child injured in the Ajegunle area of the state.

The incident occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, when police officers were dispatched to the Nosamu area of Ajegunle following an emergency distress call.

The response team was deployed to quell a violent clash between two rival street groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys, who were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons over a dispute regarding illegal toll collection.

According to an official statement issued on Saturday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, ASP Olajide discharged his service firearm during the operation, with the bullets striking the two young girls who were nearby.

Both victims were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Omole Taiwo was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead. The second injured child remains admitted in stable condition.

”The command is deeply saddened by the loss of a young and innocent life and shares in the grief of the bereaved family,” Adebisi stated. “ASP Olajide has been disarmed and detained, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts and determine appropriate legal and disciplinary action.”

Following the event, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased in Ajegunle. CP Fatai offered his sympathies and reassured the family and members of the public that the investigation will be conducted with transparency, promising that no officer found culpable will be shielded from justice.

The Lagos State Police Command has urged any members of the public with additional information regarding the incident to come forward to assist the ongoing SCID investigation.
