Residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, have expressed deep frustration over a prolonged power outage that has left parts of the neighbourhood in darkness for nearly two weeks, severely disrupting domestic life and local business activities.
The blackout, caused by a blown transformer servicing major residential areas including Alhaji Hakeem Odumosu Street, has drawn sharp criticism from community members over what they describe as negligence, poor communication, and indifference on the part of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).
Residents lamented that food items have spoiled in storage, while the reliance on private generators has significantly escalated daily fuel expenses amidst high petrol prices.
Affected members of the community reported receiving no formal updates or timeline for repairs from EKEDC despite repeated inquiries. Remote workers and households noted that operating private generators for extended hours has created an unsustainable financial burden.
Responding to the development, an EKEDC official confirmed that a request for the required repair materials had been approved by the company’s head office. The official assured residents that the necessary equipment would be dispatched to enable technical teams to commence work and restore power supply to the affected areas during the week.
