The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has launched a fierce critique against the federal government, accusing it of abandoning its core governance responsibilities, failing to tackle worsening insecurity, and actively working to destabilize opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
​In a sharply worded statement, the caucus expressed deep concern over the current trajectory of the nation, warning that political maneuvers are taking precedence over the welfare and safety of Nigerians.
The opposition lawmakers asserted that administrative duties and economic reforms have taken a backseat as the ruling party shifts its primary focus toward retaining power in 2027.
The caucus highlighted the relentless wave of banditry, kidnapping, and regional instability, arguing that the government’s current strategies are yielding insufficient results while citizens continue to bear the brunt of the crisis.
Lawmakers alleged a deliberate plot to systemicially weaken opposition platforms through political interference and intimidation, which they argue poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
​”We are witnessing a dangerous trend where governance has been completely relegated to the background while the machinery of state is deployed to destabilize opposition structures ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement read. “The primary duty of any government is the security and welfare of its people, both of which are currently being neglected.”
​The minority caucus called on the administration to pivot its focus back to urgent national issues, specifically demanding a revamped security architecture to address the immediate threats facing rural and urban communities.
The minority caucus also demand decisive economic interventions to alleviate the harsh living conditions of the populace and commitment to preserving democratic institutions and ensuring a level playing field for all political actors.
​The federal government has yet to issue an official response to the caucus’s allegations.
