The former National Publicity Secretary of the now-defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has strongly criticized Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for publicly attacking former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Eze expressed his disapproval of Wike’s recent comments and reminded him that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which Wike seems intent on undermining, was largely shaped by Atiku’s efforts.
In a detailed statement released to the media on Monday, Eze condemned Wike’s remarks about Atiku, where Wike had boldly asserted that Nigerians rejected Atiku in the last election. Eze called Wike’s attack on the former vice president distasteful, particularly given Atiku’s significant role in the formation and success of the PDP, and his standing as one of Nigeria’s most influential politicians. He noted that Atiku is widely regarded as a “detribalized Nigerian” with a proven record of promoting unity and democracy in the country.
“I read with great concern and disappointment the shocking statement made by Wike during an event for outgoing lawmakers, where he claimed that Nigerians rejected Atiku Abubakar. It is particularly troubling that such comments are coming from someone who has personally benefited from the PDP’s platform,” Eze remarked.
Eze went on to highlight Atiku’s instrumental role in Nigerian politics, calling him a “foremost mobilizer, democrat, philanthropist, and detribalized leader” who has worked tirelessly to advance the country’s democratic framework. He stressed that Atiku played a crucial part in the 1999 elections, which brought Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to power as Nigeria’s first president under the PDP banner, thereby shaping the country’s political landscape in the Fourth Republic.
He also hinted that Wike’s comments may stem from ignorance, as he seems unaware or perhaps has forgotten that in politics, “there are no permanent enemies, only permanent interests.” Eze suggested that Wike’s recent attacks could be short-sighted, especially as they seem to overlook the broader history and legacy of the PDP and the pivotal role Atiku played in its creation.
Furthermore, Eze emphasized the irony of Wike’s stance, as he himself has benefited from the PDP’s political structure. He accused the FCT minister of having a selective memory when it comes to recognizing those who have built the foundation on which he now stands, warning that such divisive rhetoric could damage the very party that facilitated Wike’s rise to prominence.
Eze’s rebuke reflects a deep-seated frustration within some factions of the PDP, who view Wike’s recent political maneuvers and public statements as harmful to the unity of the party. According to Eze, Wike’s bold declarations against Atiku—someone who has given so much to the PDP and to Nigeria’s political landscape—are not only disrespectful but also damaging to the integrity of the party.
In his concluding remarks, Eze urged Wike to remember the legacy and contributions of those who came before him in the PDP and to avoid engaging in unnecessary conflicts that could weaken the party’s cohesion.
