A high-profile political gathering in Abuja, featuring prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, was abruptly disrupted today due to a dispute over delegate representation from Jigawa State.
The meeting, convened by the National Political Consultative Group (North) at the Abuja Continental Hotel, descended into chaos when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, introduced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State. This announcement was met with immediate protest from several Jigawa delegates, who stormed the stage, preventing the appointed individual from speaking and insisting on selecting their own representative.
In response to the escalating situation, security personnel, including members of the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and private guards, swiftly intervened to protect key attendees such as Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi. The tension subsided after Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, along with another delegate, was accepted to represent the state, allowing the meeting to proceed.
