A Lagos-based cleric, political mobilizer, and Prophet, Sir Prof. Amb. Godwin Ikuru, has officially declared his intention to contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general elections under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Addressing journalists and supporters during a press conference and campaign launch on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom of the Ikeja Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Prof. Ikuru unveiled his campaign theme, “I Am the One the People Need.” He promised a sweeping transformation across Urhoboland modeled after the infrastructural development seen in Lagos State.
Drawing parallels to progressive governance in Lagos under successive administrations—from Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Prof. Ikuru emphasized his desire to replicate similar urban renewal and economic progress across Delta Central.
He noted that despite being an oil-producing region, many communities across the eight local government areas of Delta Central suffer from inadequate infrastructure, promising urgent interventions in healthcare, road networks, and youth job creation. The declaration comes following his victory in the SDP primaries, announced by Hon. Osasuyi Amadasun, Chairman of the Delta State SDP Electoral Committee.
Prof. Ikuru secured 70 votes to defeat his rival contender, Hon. Lucky O.O. Ukueku, thereby earning the party’s official ticket for the senatorial race. Speaking on his ambition, Prof. Ikuru stated that the level of development in Delta Central remains unacceptable relative to its resource contribution.
He declared that the time has come for transformational leadership, urging the electorate to trust his governance vision built on lessons observed in Lagos. Hon. Amadasun also commended the primary process as transparent and democratic, adding that Prof. Ikuru’s vision and grassroots appeal make him a formidable contender to deliver effective representation.
A representative from the Chief Ovie Omo-Agege Support Group and local grassroots mobilizers also voiced support, affirming that the people of Urhoboland are clamoring for accessible, empathetic leadership and confirming that campaign structures are actively mobilizing across all wards.
Prof. Ikuru concluded the event by calling on all sons and daughters of the Urhobo nation, both locally and in the diaspora, to join the movement as campaign committees are activated across the eight local government areas ahead of the official INEC campaign window.
