The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed a 90-day economic action plan aimed at easing living costs, improving food affordability, and accelerating high-impact projects across the nation. The decision was reached on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during the council’s 161st meeting, which was held virtually from the Presidential Villa in Abuja under the chairmanship of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The interim roadmap, drafted by the Federal Ministry of Finance, seeks to consolidate gains from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms while bringing immediate relief to Nigerian households and businesses.
Presenting the plan to council members, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele outlined five core priority areas driving the 90-day strategy: enhancing food affordability, harmonising federal and state tax structures, removing administrative bottlenecks to attract private investment, completing high-impact infrastructure projects, and providing targeted, regulated support to vulnerable households.
Oyedele added that the broader economic outlook aims to lower headline inflation and interest rates to single digits by 2027 through synchronized fiscal and monetary execution across all tiers of government. Presiding over the deliberations, Vice President Kashim Shettima urged state governors and institutional heads to ensure reform policies translate directly into improved living standards for citizens.
Emphasizing the government’s duty to create economic certainty, Shettima noted that the first dividend of prosperity should be the confidence for citizens to plan their lives, adding that public authority must serve to provide that assurance and give President Tinubu’s economic vision genuine social depth and productive strength.
According to an official briefing released after the meeting by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the council also approved a national monitoring dashboard to track federation projects and oversee the transparent utilization of revenues accrued from fuel subsidy removal.
Additionally, NEC agreed to establish a joint federal-state financing framework for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Bus Initiative and Electric Vehicles to slash daily commuting costs nationwide.
The council rounded off its session by evaluating national public health security, reviewing state-level preparedness following recent Ebola containment measures, and reaffirming political commitment toward polio eradication and nationwide livestock development initiatives.
