On Saturday, September 12, 2026, human rights and advocacy group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), issued a critical press statement detailing severe ecological crisis caused by devastating gully erosion threatening to swallow the Ugo Community in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State.
​The report, released during a emergency media briefing at the advocacy group’s headquarters in Onitsha, highlighted rapidly advancing chasms that have already destroyed ancestral homes, farmland, and critical access roads connecting Ugo to neighboring communities.
​Speaking on behalf of the organization , Intersociety’s Board Chairman, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, detailed the human and material toll of the disaster, noting that several families have been rendered homeless following recent torrential rains.
​”The structural integrity of Ugo Community is virtually undermined,” stated Comrade Umeagbalasi. “If the Federal Government, the Ecological Project Office, and Governor Chukwuma Soludo do not step in with immediate heavy-duty engineering intervention, an entire community risks total extinction from the map of Anambra State within months.”
​Joining the call, Intersociety’s Head of Campaign and Workroom Department, Chidimma Udegbunam, Esq., emphasised the immediate steps needed to avert further displacement.
This steps include:- Emergency Evacuation and Relief: Immediate relocation and provision of humanitarian aid for displaced residents along the active erosion corridors.
A rapid, direct deployment of Anambra State’s ecological funds and Federal Intervention Funds to construct deep-drainage channels and retaining walls and deployment of environmental engineers to halt further soil collapse ahead of expected peak rainfall in the coming weeks.
​Local leaders and displaced residents of Ugo Community have appealed to both international donors and non-governmental organizations to join hands in mitigating what they describe as a looming socio-economic and environmental catastrophe.
