Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus to publicly apologize to captain Cristiano Ronaldo, warning that failure to diffuse their high-profile feud could ultimately cost the manager his job.

The friction between the two figures erupted following Portugal’s recent UEFA Nations League fixtures in late September. Reports indicate that Ronaldo abruptly departed the national team’s training base following a heated tactical disagreement with Jesus.

While Jesus subsequently addressed the media after Portugal’s victory over Norway, insisting he “did not need to apologize to anyone,” Ferdinand argues that the manager’s refusal to back down risks alienating the dressing room.

Speaking publicly via social media platform X and quoted by Foot Mercato, Ferdinand urged Jesus to swallow his pride and repair the relationship:

”The coach has to come out and apologize… otherwise, he’s eventually going to get sacked,” Ferdinand stated. “He has to say publicly, ‘Listen, I got this situation wrong.’ He must then speak with CR7 and tell him clearly what he wants.”

The rift has sent shockwaves through Portuguese football, prompting high-ranking officials to step in. Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença attempted to downplay the crisis, describing the dispute as an internal misunderstanding that the federation intends to resolve before the next international window.

Government figures have also weighed in on the superstar’s importance to the country. Highlighting Ronaldo’s cultural and economic footprint, government spokespersons noted via Foot Mercato that Ronaldo remains the “most famous person in Portugal” and vital to the national brand, urging both parties to reach an agreement for the good of the team.

With team-mates reportedly stunned by the dispute and figureheads like Ferdinand backing Ronaldo, pressure continues to mount on Jorge Jesus to reconcile with his captain before Portugal resume their Nations League campaign.
