The Federal Government has intensified its nationwide crackdown on fake academic credentials by linking national education databases directly with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) registration infrastructure.
​The initiative was detailed during a joint inter-agency meeting held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja.
The partnership aims to deploy a direct Application Programming Interface (API) to automate certificate authentication, accelerate clearance times, and protect legitimate graduates from administrative exclusion during national service mobilisation and employment screening.
​Speaking at the session, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, stated that the digital integration is part of the digital transformation agenda under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
​”The digital transformation of Nigeria’s education system is strengthening the integrity of academic qualifications, tackling certificate racketeering, and ensuring that genuine students and graduates are not disadvantaged,” Alausa said.
​The central pillar of this effort relies on the Nigerian Education Repository Data Bank (NERD), which aggregates university qualifications, tracks student progression, and issues verifiable digital credentials.
Under the new operational framework, prospective corps members must present a NERD-verified digital certificate to register for national service.
​The Ministry also announced plans to launch a national Learner Identification Number (LIN). Developed alongside the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the LIN will establish a single identity profile for students from admission to graduation, resolving recurring identity mismatches and name sequencing errors that previously delayed mobilisations.
​Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed (represented at the briefing by Director of Operations, Alhaji Abdulrazak Nafiu), confirmed that the Corps has fully complied with the Federal Executive Council’s mandate to integrate with NERD.
​Nafiu highlighted existing technological safeguards, noting that the introduction of embedded QR codes on NYSC certificates has “virtually eliminated document cloning” within the scheme.
​”The NYSC will continue to strengthen its verification systems to guard against emerging fraudulent practices and ensure qualified graduates are not unfairly excluded from national service,” Nafiu assured.
​The policy builds upon directives from October 2025, which mandated all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to use the National Credential Verification Service for vetting prospective and existing employees.
The integration targets lingering issues across higher education, including unaccredited foreign degrees, unauthorized HND admissions, and fraudulently issued diplomas.
