The Federal Government of Nigeria, acting through the National Sports Commission (NSC), has delivered a firm ultimatum demanding the immediate resignation of Ibrahim Musa Gusau and the entire executive board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The directive comes as state authorities move to institute a complete overhaul of the country’s footballing administration following a disastrous international campaign.
​The decisive confrontation unfolded during a high-stakes emergency meeting convened at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, inside the Senate Committee Room at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, head of the Senate Committee on Sports, the session brought NFF executives face-to-face with NSC leadership to address the systemic collapse of Nigeria’s national football programs.
​Addressing newsmen during a media briefing outside the chamber, Senator Ningi confirmed that legislative and executive bodies are aligned on taking drastic measures to reform the sector.
​”Nigerian football has reached an unacceptable low despite unprecedented financial backing from the Federal Government,” Senator Ningi declared. “With both our men’s and women’s Senior National Teams missing out on their respective FIFA World Cups, administrative accountability is no longer optional. We are acting to protect the future of the sport under strict adherence to national interest and governance protocols.”
​The mounting pressure follows back-to-back qualification heartbreaks for the nation’s flagship teams. Super Eagles failed to secure passage to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, falling short in the qualification playoffs.

​In response to the crisis, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko announced the suspension of all upcoming electoral processes, including the NFF elective congress previously scheduled for late September in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The NSC is reportedly finalizing the appointment of an interim normalization committee to oversee daily operations, audit financial management, and restructure football governance across all cadres.
