The management of Northwest University Kano (NWUK) has officially debunked a trending social media video claiming that the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, suffered an academic deficiency or “carry-over” in his studies at the institution.
​In an official statement released on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in Kano, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Ibrahim, characterized the viral video and its accompanying narratives as “false, baseless, misleading, and without an iota of fact whatsoever.”
​The management explained that the footage in question was recorded on Saturday, August 8, 2026, when Emir Sanusi II attended an academic event hosted on campus.
In a public lecture organized by the International Humanitarian Law Society (a student law association at NWUK). Social media users subsequently edited footage from the event, attaching captions claiming the royal father was present to resolve academic deficiencies or clear a carry-over course.
Officials from the Kano Emirate Council, including Muhammad Ado, Secretary in the Office of the Emir, revealed that Emir Sanusi II currently enrolled as a 200-level Law (LL.B) student is actually on the verge of a First-Class grade point average.
​Addressing the situation on behalf of the university management, Abubakar Ibrahim stated:”The management categorically distances itself from the said video, write-ups, and the claims contained therein. The public, as well as the university community, are advised to disregard the misleading content as it does not represent the position or reality of the institution.”
​Ibrahim added a stern legal warning regarding defamation: “Anyone found involved in creating, publishing, or circulating false and defamatory content against the university or its scholars will be reported to the relevant security authorities and prosecuted in accordance with applicable laws.”
