CWG 2026: President Tinubu Hails Team Nigeria’s 24-Medal Haul, Pledges Sustained Sports Investment

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Team Nigeria for their impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the contingent secured a total of 24 medals. ​
In an official press statement released on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Abuja, the President commended the contingent for flying the national flag with pride, discipline, and distinction throughout the 11-day multi-sport event held from July 23 to August 2. ​
The statement was issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. ​President Tinubu noted that Team Nigeria’s medal tally comprising 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals, placed the country seventh on the overall medal table and made Nigeria the highest-ranked African nation at the Games.
​”The experience gained by every athlete will serve as a strong foundation for greater accomplishments in future international competitions and inspire many young Nigerians to embrace the values of commitment, hard work, and national service,” President Tinubu stated through his spokesperson. ​
The President praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko, alongside the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) for providing the structural support and preparation that enabled the athletes to compete at elite levels. ​
Reiterating his administration’s sports policy framework, President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to expand funding and support systems for Nigerian athletics.
Highlighting key areas for Infrastructure Upgrade, the President hopes to strengthening national sporting institutions and improving training facilities across the country and help create comprehensive development pathways to ensure elite athletes receive world-class training and welfare.
Tinubu propose leveraging sports as a strategic driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, and international diplomacy under the Renewed Hope Initiative. ​The President concluded by urging all returning athletes and coaching staff to remain disciplined and focused as preparations begin for upcoming international athletic tournaments.
