Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in a high-stakes Round of 16 encounter at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, October 29.

The fixture is scheduled for a 5:00 PM kickoff (4:00 PM local time) at the pitch of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, near Rabat. The high-stakes knockout tie sees both sides battling for a coveted place in the quarter-finals as the tournament enters its critical single-elimination phase.

Nigeria secured their spot in the Round of 16 after an impressive group campaign, finishing second in Group B with six points from three matches. The Flamingos bounced back from an opening loss to Poland by defeating Puerto Rico and culminating in a resounding 3–1 victory over two-time defending champions North Korea.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead in the 38th minute, and a brilliant free-kick sealed Nigeria’s dominant performance to end North Korea’s 18-match unbeaten run.

Mexico clinched their own passage as Group F runners-up, overcoming an initial defeat against Spain to post a 3–1 victory over Chile and sealing qualification on Sunday, October 25, with a hard-fought 1–0 win against Australia.

Ahead of Thursday’s showdown, both head coaches outlined their strategic preparations and mindsets. Nigeria head coach Akeem Busari praised his team’s tactical discipline against North Korea and stated that the squad had worked to disrupt opponents’ preferred attacking patterns while maintaining defensive numerical advantages.

Busari noted that the team remains singularly focused on executing their game plan, securing the quarter-final berth, and pushing toward a podium finish.

On the opposing bench, Mexico head coach Jimena Rojas highlighted her side’s building momentum following their win over Australia, acknowledging that confronting a physically dynamic and attack-minded Nigerian team will serve as a rigorous test for her players.

The winner of Thursday’s clash in Salé will advance to the quarter-finals scheduled for Sunday, November 1.

As the global competition progresses toward the semi-finals on November 4 and the final on November 7 at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Nigeria aims to build on its proud World Cup history and surpass its previous bronze-medal achievement.
