The newly established South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has been charged to operate with the highest levels of transparency and fiscal discipline to ensure the rapid transformation of the Niger Delta region. ​The call was made by the Chairman of the SSDC Governing Board, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, during an inaugural meeting with board members and management staff.
​Addressing the newly appointed officials, Nwuche emphasized that the commission cannot afford to walk the path of past regional agencies that were bogged down by inefficiency. He urged the team to firmly uphold the pillars of accountability, prudence, transparency, integrity, and professionalism in managing the resources allocated to the agency. ​
“The establishment of the SSDC represents a fresh chapter for the South-South geopolitical zone,” Nwuche stated. “We have been entrusted with a critical mandate, and our success will depend entirely on how transparently and prudently we manage the resources meant for our people. Professionalism must be our watchword.”
​The Chairman noted that the primary focus of the commission will be to tackle long-standing infrastructural deficits, ecological challenges, and youth unemployment across the region’s six states.
He warned that public scrutiny would be intense and that the board would maintain a zero-tolerance policy for corruption or administrative bottlenecks. ​By prioritizing strategic planning and project monitoring, Nwuche expressed confidence that the SSDC would justify its establishment and deliver tangible development directly to the grassroots.
​In response, members of the management team expressed their readiness to align with the Chairman’s vision. They pledged to implement robust internal control mechanisms to ensure that every kobo allocated to the commission is strictly accounted for and directed toward impactful regional projects. ​
With this charge, expectations are high that the SSDC will set a new benchmark for corporate governance and development delivery in Nigeria’s oil-rich region.
