​The UN warning arrives amidst heavy, persistent early-June downpours that have already visibly strained urban infrastructure. The sudden onset of the rains has triggered a sharp shift in public discourse, causing disaster management discussions to spike across local radio stations and social media platforms.
​Fearing a repeat of past catastrophic flood years, citizens are aggressively calling on state governments to move past rhetoric and initiate visible, on-the-ground interventions.
​”We cannot wait until our homes are submerged to start acting,” said one caller on a Lagos-based morning radio show. “The government knows the vulnerable zones. They need to clear the drainages now.”
