The United States military has conducted precision “self-defense” airstrikes targeting Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and attack drones in southern Iran.
​The operation, carried out over the weekend by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), marks a sharp escalation in the region even as both nations try to negotiate a more permanent end to the ongoing war that began in February.
According to CENTCOM, U.S. fighter jets struck targets in the coastal city of Goruk and on Qeshm Island, both highly strategic locations overlooking the heavily contested Strait of Hormuz.
​The military action was a direct response to recent “aggressive Iranian actions,” specifically the shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 Reaper drone operating over international waters.
​The situation escalated rapidly on Monday following the weekend airstrikes. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated by launching ballistic missiles and drones toward an airbase in Kuwait utilized by American forces. The IRGC claimed the base was used to launch a previous strike on an Iranian telecommunications tower on Sirik Island.
The Kuwaiti military and CENTCOM confirmed that air defense systems successfully intercepted the incoming Iranian threats. No American or Kuwaiti service members were reported harmed, though local civil aviation experienced temporary disruptions.
These kinetic exchanges are severely testing the nominal, fragile truce established in April. The strikes come at a critical moment, as diplomats actively work to finalize a 60-day extension to the ceasefire and open new channels regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
