Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British Shakespearean actor who transformed into a global pop-culture icon through his lead roles in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises, died Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles.
He was 86 years old. Stewart’s death was officially confirmed on Thursday, October 29, by his spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, as well as through a family statement shared across his verified social media accounts. The actor passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife, Sunny Ozell, and close family members following a “brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
”His sonorous voice and singular talent will forever be synonymous with indelible performances in every genre,” the official statement read. “He explored the human condition in all its poetic complexity and brought hope not only to the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but into science fiction’s most iconic final frontier aboard the Starship Enterprise.”
Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Stewart began his dramatic journey on the theatrical stage. Trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he spent decades treading the boards with the Royal Shakespeare Company and London’s National Theatre, mastering classical roles from Macbeth to Claudius.
His career achieved international stardom in 1987 when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Over seven television seasons, feature films, and the recent series Star Trek: Picard, Stewart brought intellectual gravitas, moral authority, and warmth to sci-fi television.
In 2000, Stewart captured a new generation of fans as Professor Charles Xavier in the blockbuster X-Men film franchise. Alongside his long-time friend Sir Ian McKellen, Stewart anchored the Marvel cinematic realm for over two decades. Family spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak noted that Stewart spent his final hours “held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire.”
Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood and the global theatre community honoring his six-decade legacy on stage, television, and film. Details regarding a private memorial service and public remembrance events will be announced by his representatives in the coming days.
