The ancient coastal community of Makun Omi in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area has initiated a landmark effort to preserve its rich cultural heritage through a structured historical documentation project.
The initiative was formally announced by the Osobia of Makun Omi, Oba Kazeem Adeshina Salami, who revealed the constitution of a seven-member committee tasked with producing a comprehensive account of the town’s origins, traditions, and cultural identity.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the palace spokesperson, Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, the move aligns with provisions outlined in the Makun Omi Strategic Development Plan and reflects a broader vision to institutionalize the community’s history.
Oba Salami emphasized that the committee will source materials from both local and external archives to ensure the final publication is credible and authoritative. “This project will enable indigenes to pass down the history, values, and culture of our great community to present and future generations,” the monarch stated.
The palace has pledged full support for the initiative, including the provision of necessary resources, with a projected completion timeline of eight months.
The committee is chaired by Bola Ogunpolu, and includes notable members such as Abiodun Odumade, Wale Okulenu, Dupe Okesanjo, Victor Adefarasin, and Victor Olabanwo.
The project marks a significant cultural milestone for Makun Omi, reinforcing growing efforts among indigenous communities to safeguard their history against erosion and ensure its continuity for generations to come.
