The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Campaign Organisation in Nasarawa State has strongly rejected allegations linking its governorship candidate, retired Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, and former Governor Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to the recent disruption of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally held at Lafia Square in Lafia.
The unrest occurred on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during an APC presidential campaign event attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Security operatives deployed tear gas to disperse agitated youths after factions clashed, leaving dozens injured and forcing organisers to bring the rally to an abrupt end to protect attending dignitaries.
Following the commotion, the Nasarawa State Government issued a directive through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Labaran Magaji, calling on the Department of State Services (DSS) to conduct an immediate, full-scale investigation. The official statement described the violence as an ignoble act perpetuated by irate youths suspected to be linked to high-profile political figures, specifically citing Senator Tanko Al-Makura and former IGP Mohammed Adamu.
Responding on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the SDP Campaign Council dismissed the allegations as unsubstantiated “trial by press release” and an attempt to defame key political figures. The council argued that accusing public figures without presenting verifiable evidence violates due process and represents an abuse of governmental authority, noting that using terms like “suspected to be sponsored” does not relieve the administration of accountability for damaging claims.
The SDP spokesperson urged law enforcement agencies to ignore political witch-hunts targeted at opposition leaders and instead examine the underlying causes of public dissatisfaction, which the party blamed on local governance failures and internal friction following the APC’s primary elections.
Highlighting the shifting political climate in the state, the SDP asserted that over 80 percent of genuine APC members in Nasarawa State have defected to their ranks, advising the Presidency to take note of local political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Concluding its stance, the SDP Campaign Organisation advised Governor Abdullahi Sule to prioritize political tolerance and called on supporters across Nasarawa State to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused as security forces maintain an increased presence throughout Lafia to preserve public order.
