Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend the country’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Obi stressed that unlike in previous elections, Nigerians must ensure that their votes truly count, warning that anyone who attempts to undermine the process would face legal consequences.
According to him, citizens should not only cast their votes but also stay back at polling units to monitor the counting and transmission of results, describing such civic engagement as critical to protecting democracy.
Obi stated that those who refuse to allow votes to count would be regarded as individuals working against the nation’s democratic future and would be held accountable under the law.
He further warned that electoral malpractice threatens the country’s stability and future, urging all stakeholders, including electoral officials, security agencies, and political actors, to uphold transparency and fairness.
The former governor of Anambra State noted that credible elections remain the foundation for national development and called on Nigerians to remain peaceful while demanding accountability.
The call comes amid growing political activities and early mobilization by parties and supporters ahead of the 2027 polls in Nigeria, with increased emphasis on voter participation, technology-driven result transmission, and electoral reforms.
Political analysts say Obi’s message reflects rising concerns among Nigerians about electoral integrity and the need for stronger citizen involvement in the democratic process.
