United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Nigeria to take the lead in Africa’s push for a restructured global order, describing the country as uniquely positioned to guide the continent toward superpower status in the evolving international system.
Guterres also threw his weight behind Nigeria’s longstanding campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), noting that the country’s demographic strength, democratic stability, and economic potential place it in a strong position to represent Africa at the highest level of global decision-making.
The UN chief made the remarks during a high-level bilateral meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Details of the meeting were contained in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
According to Guterres, Nigeria’s large population, sustained democratic governance, and vast human and natural resources give it a strategic advantage in shaping Africa’s future. He emphasised that the global system must reflect contemporary realities and provide stronger representation for Africa, which remains underrepresented in key international institutions.
“Nigeria’s voice carries weight across the continent and beyond,” the Secretary-General reportedly said, stressing that the country’s historical commitment to multilateralism and peacekeeping operations further strengthens its claim to global leadership.
Guterres commended the economic reforms initiated under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as bold steps aimed at stabilising Africa’s largest economy. He noted that sustained reform efforts would not only benefit Nigerians but also contribute to broader regional stability and economic integration.
The UN chief also praised Nigeria’s stabilisation role within the Sahel region and the Economic Community of West African States sub-region. He acknowledged the country’s diplomatic and security interventions in addressing political crises, insurgency, and unconstitutional changes of government across West Africa.
Vice President Shettima, in his response, reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting inclusive global governance reforms. He reaffirmed the country’s readiness to work closely with the United Nations and African partners to advance peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
The meeting at the 39th African Union Summit underscored Nigeria’s growing diplomatic profile and renewed advocacy for Africa’s place in global affairs. Observers say Guterres’ endorsement adds significant momentum to Nigeria’s quest for permanent representation at the Security Council, a reform many African leaders argue is long overdue.
