The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has taken a decisive step to suspend future postings of prospective corps members to Cross River State due to the severely dilapidated state of its Permanent Orientation Camp in Obubra Local Government Area.

The decision follows an extensive, unscheduled facility inspection carried out at the camp by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during the ongoing 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I orientation exercise.

During the inspection on October 11, 2026, authorities observed that key residential and operational facilities at the Obubra camp, originally designed to accommodate up to 2,500 corps members per stream, had severely deteriorated beyond acceptable national safety standards.

Concerns over outdated living quarters, inadequate sanitary infrastructure, and general structural decay led the scheme’s leadership to halt subsequent deployments to the South-South state pending urgent intervention.

The current 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I corps members hosted at the facility will complete their orientation course, but Batch ‘C’ Stream II and subsequent deployments will be redirected to neighboring states until full renovation occurs.

The infrastructure decay has already drastically affected deployment figures for the state. While previous streams routinely saw over 2,500 corps members posted to Cross River, the current 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I registered only 1,064 corps members at the Obubra facility.

Furthermore, over 700 corps members currently in camp have already filed formal applications for relocation to other states citing unfavorable living conditions.

Speaking on the development from the NYSC State Secretariat in Calabar, an internal official revealed:

”For now, after this stream, because we are in Batch ‘C’, Stream 1, Stream 2 will no longer come to the state. The facilities at Obubra have become outdated and no longer meet national standards for hosting Nigerian youth. We are seeking immediate Cross River State Government intervention to salvage the situation.”

Under the NYSC Act, state governments hold the statutory responsibility of providing and maintaining orientation camp facilities, while the Federal Government manages operational logistics, feeding, and corps welfare.

While addressing corps members at the camp venue on October 11, 2026, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu emphasized that the scheme prioritises corps members’ welfare and safety above all else, while announcing recent federal upward reviews in feeding allowances.

As of Wednesday afternoon, October 14, 2026, official reactions from the Cross River State Commissioner for Youth Development, Ijom Ukam, remain pending following repeated inquiries regarding rehabilitation plans for the Obubra facility.

The immediate suspension highlights growing concerns over state-level commitment to maintaining youth infrastructure, leaving local organizations and secondary schools across Cross River facing a prospective shortage of corps members for primary assignment duties in the coming months.
