Experts push AI integration, decarbonisation for future energy systems

Global energy experts have underscored the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), energy integration, and decarbonisation in driving industrial transformation amid shifting global dynamics.

The experts made this known at the ongoing 2025 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Speaking, Mr Arzybek Kozhovshev, Minister in charge of Energy, Eurasian Economic Commission, said AI-driven systems were becoming critical to the industry’s evolving energy infrastructure.

Kozhovshev spoke during the expert session on “New Energy Equilibria: Shaping the Eurasian Response to a Changing Global Order.”

He underscored the need to harness automation and data analytics to improve operational resilience and supply security across member states.

“Our union is in the early stages of developing AI capabilities, from automated pipeline inspection to real-time monitoring of emergency situations.

“These technologies will enhance safety, boost production, and redefine how we manage energy systems.

“Energy leaders across Eurasia are positioning technology at the heart of their response to a rapidly changing global order,” he said.

He commended China’s leadership in AI infrastructure, adding that the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is analysing opportunities to integrate smart technologies into its unified energy framework.

Kozhoshev outlined the EAEU’s ambition to build a Unified Energy Market Policy that balances national priorities with collective resilience, adding that the five-member Union currently accounts for 14 per cent of global oil development.

“In the last 25 years, we have faced difficult times and disruptions across supply chains. Today, our focus is on developing new logistics routes and creating an integrated market that protects our energy resources and national interests,” he said.

He added that Eurasian countries are coordinating closely on energy policy alignment, resource optimisation, and cross-border logistics, while investing in materials such as aluminum.

He identified aluminum as having strong potential in transportation and industrial development, supporting 10 per cent economic growth across the region.

On energy transition, Kozhoshev affirmed the union’s commitment to reducing coal dependence and developing alternative energy sources such as nuclear and renewable, emphasising that traditional energy will remain vital in the near term.

The Managing Director and Group Chief Executive, ADNOC, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, highlighted the need for infrastructure to support artificial intelligence and data centre development.

AI Jaber said AI was increasingly common in the energy industry, with one in five companies now using agentic AI in their operations, a recent Adnoc-Microsoft report found.

Echoing the call for balance and technological transparency, Tim Wyatt, the President of Caturus Energy, highlighted the central role of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in global decarbonisation efforts.

Speaking on “Decarbonising Global Supply Chains: The Role of Natural Gas and LNG,” Wyatt described LNG as a bridge fuel with the unique ability to manage emissions across the value chain.

“It allows us to monitor, capture, and reduce emissions, particularly methane, through carbon capture integration and transparent reporting systems,” he said.

Wyatt said the mood around decarbonisation is shifting, especially with COP30 set to take place in Brazil, as nations seek practical pathways to meet climate targets without destabilising energy supply.
