The Nigerian equity market strengthened Month-on-Month in October 2026, driven by aggressive, selective buying interest in heavyweight stocks that pushed the benchmark NGX All-Share Index past the 250,000-point psychological threshold. The month concluded at the close of trading on Friday, October 30, 2026, with the NGX All-Share Index gaining 1.2% Month-on-Month to settle at 254,299.49 points, up from September’s closing figure of 251,211.67 points.
Over the same period, total market capitalization expanded by N2.01 trillion, or 1.23%, advancing from N163.10 trillion to N165.11 trillion. The final session ended at 2:30 PM WAT on the main trading floor of the Nigerian Exchange Limited, located at NGX House on Customs Street, Marina, Lagos Island.
The rally was anchored by major bellwethers across key sectors. Industrial heavyweight Dangote Cement Plc led the surge with a 33.12% Month-on-Month jump to close at N1,420.00 per share, buoyed by robust third-quarter earnings. Consumer and agricultural goods also contributed to the upward momentum, as Livestock Feeds Plc escalated 64.20% to finish at N13.30, while Honeywell Flour Mills Plc advanced 25.28% to close at N22.55.
In the banking sector, Fidelity Bank Plc posted a 10.85% gain to reach N24.00 per share. Despite the strong headline figures, broader market breadth remained tight throughout October. Only 28 equities recorded price gains against 72 decliners out of 146 tracked securities, highlighting a highly concentrated rally propelled primarily by mega-cap stocks rather than widespread market participation.
”The return of capital to high-conviction, highly capitalized equities reflects targeted institutional positioning ahead of full-year earnings,” said Jide Ajia, Senior Financial Analyst and Market Reporter, speaking during the end-of-month market review session at the Exchange. “Crossing and holding the 250,000-point line demonstrates strong baseline demand despite ongoing macroeconomic headwinds.”
Offering a broader view of investor sentiment, Lead Market Analyst Kelechi Mgboji noted that while the index appreciation is headline-positive, the concentration of gains in a select few mega-caps indicates that retail investors remain cautious, preferring liquidity and solid corporate balance sheets over secondary equities.
With October’s performance bringing Year-to-Date returns to 63.42%, market participants now turn their focus to final-quarter positioning and upcoming corporate disclosures.
