The Nigerian Armed Forces on Thursday held a colourful pulling-out parade in honour of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), marking the end of an illustrious 39 years and 4 months of dedicated service to the nation.
In his valedictory remarks, General Musa expressed deep gratitude to God, the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Nigerian people for the privilege of serving his country at the highest military level.
“This parade is not just a ceremony; it is a sacred military tradition that marks the conclusion of a remarkable journey,” Musa said, reflecting on his nearly four-decade-long career. “I am humbled by the privilege of having served my country.”
The retired General thanked President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him to lead the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the appointment as a “tremendous honour and sacred duty.”
He also congratulated his successor and the current service chiefs, pledging his full support for their continued success in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and unity.
Musa extended appreciation to the National Assembly, the Executive, Judiciary, and the Nigerian people for their support throughout his tenure, emphasizing that national security remains a collective responsibility.
Addressing officers and men of the Armed Forces, the former CDS lauded their courage, professionalism, and sacrifices in defending the nation. “You are the true heroes of our country,” he said. “I’ve witnessed your resilience in the harshest conditions and your unwavering commitment to peace and unity. It has been the highest honour of my life to serve alongside you.”
He also paid an emotional tribute to his family his wife, Ogogolilia Musa, and children, Kuwait, Yashinbobai, and Indi describing them as “the unsung heroes” who bore the burden of his long absences and the anxieties of military service.
Musa commended other security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the DSS, the NIA, and the DIA, for their steadfast collaboration with the Armed Forces, as well as the Nigerian media for their role in supporting national security efforts.
“As I retire my uniform today, I do so with a clear conscience, knowing that I gave my all,” he declared. “While the sound of the drill may fade for me, the heart of a soldier beats forever. I may be retiring from active service, but I will never retire from my love for Nigeria.”
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the nation’s peace and unity even in retirement, expressing gratitude to God for divine protection throughout his career.
“Defeat is temporary, but victory is forever,” he said with conviction. “Keep believing in Nigeria for it is a nation worth fighting for.”
