The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rising from a strategic stakeholders’ meeting in Asaba on Thursday, leaders of the Delta APC said the endorsement was borne out of “a nationalistic drive to promote stability, continuity, and inclusive governance.”
State APC Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who addressed journalists after the meeting, explained that the party’s decision was not based on partisan sentiments but on the need to consolidate on the developmental strides recorded under both leaders.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated strong political will in repositioning Nigeria’s economy and infrastructure despite daunting challenges. At the state level, Governor Oborevwori has also shown remarkable commitment to peace, inclusiveness, and infrastructural growth under his MORE agenda. As progressives, we will not allow partisanship to blind us from supporting what is good for our people,” Sobotie said.
He stressed that the unusual endorsement of a PDP governor by the APC was a signal that politics should transcend rivalry and focus on the collective good of the people.
Also speaking, a former APC governorship aspirant, Chief Cairo Ojougboh, noted that Delta’s peculiar political terrain required “alliances that guarantee stability and ensure that the state continues to benefit from the federal centre.”
The endorsement has, however, sparked mixed reactions within the party. While some members hailed the decision as a bold step toward unity and development, others argued that it could dampen the APC’s chances of fielding strong candidates in the state.
Political analysts say the development could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 elections in Delta State, as it signals a rare political handshake across party lines.
President Tinubu is yet to formally declare his intention to seek re-election, but his associates have hinted that he is likely to do so. Governor Oborevwori, on his part, is constitutionally entitled to a second term and has been consolidating his political base across the three senatorial districts.
