Troops of the Nigerian Army under Headquarters 63 Brigade/Sector 1 of Operation Delta Safe have recovered four AK-47 rifles and arrested two suspected criminals during a security operation in Ogidigben Community.
The operation, conducted in Warri South West Local Council, followed reports of sporadic gunfire in the coastal area. Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, disclosed the development to The Guardian yesterday in Asaba.
He said troops acted on credible intelligence and neutralised the threat, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of weapons and other items linked to criminal activity. Items recovered include four AK-47 rifles, six magazines, 106 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two knives, 10 machetes and four pairs of rain boots.
Bawa-Rijau added that the suspects are in military custody and undergoing further investigation to determine their involvement and possible links to wider criminal networks.
The Commander of 63 Brigade, Moronfolu Abdulmoshood Shonibare, commended the troops for their resilience and professionalism, urging them to sustain the operational tempo. He reiterated the Brigade’s resolve to deny criminal elements freedom of action within its area of responsibility.
Shonibare said security operations across Delta State and adjoining areas would be intensified to track threats to peace and stability, amid ongoing concerns over illegal weapons and sporadic violence in riverine communities.
