The Presidency on Monday, August 3, 2026, officially kicked off the final legislative drive for the establishment of state police in Nigeria, unveiling a milestone-driven seven-week timetable that will culminate in the submission of an Executive Bill to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026.
Briefing State House correspondents after convening a meeting of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, outlined the roadmap designed to transition Nigeria into a professional dual policing system.
The approved work plan runs from July 27 to September 14, 2026. The complete Executive Bill package will be submitted to President Tinubu on September 3, followed by national consultations and final revisions before formal transmission to the National Assembly.
To allow public engagement, the Presidency unveiled an online information portal (nationalpolicingbill.com), where citizens, civil society groups, and security experts can submit memoranda and position papers.
Beyond the bill itself, the final presentation will include a state readiness framework, fiscal and implementation notes, a legal audit, operational guidelines, and human rights safeguards.
Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun noted that national minimum standards will prevent political misuse and ensure accountability across all states.
States that are not immediately equipped to establish their own police forces will continue to rely on the Nigeria Police Force until they meet required operational and infrastructural benchmarks.
