Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu views Edo State as his home and deserves unwavering support from its people ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial by-election campaign rally in Ugboha Ward 10, Esan South East Local Government Area, on August 8, 2025, Okpebholo urged Edo Central residents to back Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing the President’s support for ongoing infrastructural projects in the state, including the revived Ugboha water scheme and commitments to fast-track roads like Ugboha to Ubiaja and Anegbete. He promised 2.5 million votes as a gesture of gratitude, describing the August 16 by-election as a test of this pledge.
Okpebholo reiterated this commitment during a Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) food outreach event in Benin City, assuring Tinubu of “100 percent votes” in 2027 for his developmental strides, such as the distribution of food items like noodles and semovita to vulnerable households, as noted by Leadership News and Naija News. The initiative, led by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reached seven states, including Edo, since March 2024. Okpebholo praised the First Lady’s efforts, stating, “The people of Edo are happy, enjoying a new dawn thanks to the President and his wife.” The event saw participation from key figures like the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor, and market women leaders, reinforcing the APC’s growing influence.
The governor’s remarks come amid his own political milestones, with the Supreme Court upholding his September 2024 election victory on July 10, 2025, as confirmed by a statement from Tinubu’s Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu congratulated Okpebholo, urging him to prioritize Edo’s development and deliver exceptional governance, a call echoed during their September 2024 meeting where the President pledged full support. The defection of PDP members, including former APC Chairman Anselm Ojezua, to the APC at a June 2025 rally in Irrua further signals the party’s strengthening grip, which Okpebholo described as the “political end of the PDP in Esan Central.”
