It is with deep disappointment that I respond to recent statements made by Senator Dave Umahi, advising the Igbo nation to “forget” about the 2027 presidential election. Such a declaration is not only premature—it is deeply disrespectful to the aspirations, sacrifices, and democratic rights of millions of Ndi Igbo across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
Let it be clear: Igbos are not political spectators in this nation—we are stakeholders. We are not a minority voice to be brushed aside—we are builders of this country, contributors to its economy, and defenders of its unity. We do not need permission to pursue what is justly ours, nor should any leader from our own region try to shrink the ambitions of our people to fit within the comfort zones of others.
If Senator Umahi has entered into political negotiations or compromises, he owes it to the people he claims to represent to explain—clearly and transparently—the nature of those discussions. Public trust is not a private inheritance; it is earned through accountability and service.
Let us not forget: Igbos have invested their lives, businesses, and legacies across every part of Nigeria. We have continued to believe in a united country, even when the system works against us. So for anyone, especially an Igbo leader, to come out publicly and discourage the legitimate aspirations of Ndi Igbo is not only wrong—it is a betrayal of our collective struggle.
Leadership is not about echoing the positions of those in power. It is about standing for your people, even when it is inconvenient. Senator Umahi should speak with more care, more consultation, and more courage—because what he says reflects not just on him, but on millions of Igbos who have never stopped believing in fairness, equity, and justice.
We will not be told to “forget.” We will not be told to “wait.” We will not be told to “accept less.”
We are not beggars at the gate of national leadership. We are co-owners of Nigeria.
Let no one—Igbo or not—forget that.
