The Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Maj.-Gen. Abdul Ibrahim, has lauded the Nigerian Defence Academy Officers’ Wives Association (NDAOWA) for its humanitarian service and community development within the academy and beyond.
The commandant’s commendation was contained in a statement issued by the academy’s Public Relations Officer , Maj. Mohammed Maidawa on Friday in Kaduna.
Maidawa said the commandant particularly lauded the association’s initiatives that support widows, orphans, and dependents of military personnel.
He said the commendation came during a courtesy visit by the President of NDAOWA, Mrs Halimatu Ibrahim, who led other executive members of the association to the NDA Headquarters, Afaka.
He said Ibrahim praised NDAOWA’s dedication to social impact and described her leadership as exemplary, stating that her tenure had significantly elevated the association’s profile and outreach.
Ibrahim further assured NDAOWA of the academy’s continued support in areas of human capacity development and infrastructural enhancement.
The commandant stated that the academy was committed to complementing the association’s laudable efforts toward improving lives within the NDA community.
In her remarks, the NDAOWA president congratulated Ibrahim on his appointment as the 33rd Commandant of the NDA.
She outlined her vision to deliver impactful programmes with a focus on education, youths empowerment, character building, and physical fitness.
The president highlighted the importance of nurturing strong and resilient families within the barrack’s community.
She used the opportunity to advocate the provision of a school bus to ease transportation for pupils within the academy, the introduction of discounted healthcare schemes for widows and the creation of employment opportunities for NDAOWA members.
Mrs Ibrahim also called for the revival of the Mammy Market at Afaka to stimulate local economic activity and the reopening of the NDA skills acquisition centre, which had previously equipped women and youth with vital vocational skills.
She also appealed for institutional sponsorship to enable members of NDAOWA to attend national conferences and seminars aimed at enhancing capacity in community development and leadership.
She highlighted some of NDAOWA’s recent achievements, participation at the recently concluded Africa Economic Summit hosted by the Office of the President.
They also included the launch of NDAOWA’s official social media page to boost visibility; and the award of a scholarship to an orphan, Master Adamu, who lost his entire family in a tragic road accident.
She also said the group’s recent outreach to wounded soldiers at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, was a gesture of appreciation for their sacrifice and services.
The NDAOWA president revealed several upcoming initiatives, including a partnership with Creatives Park and aims to organise Arts and Crafts programmes for children during the holiday season.
Others inckude a seminar on sex education and personal health for female cadets of the academy; and a series of leadership, resilience, and community-building training workshops tailored for women.
“We reaffirm our unwavering loyalty and commitment to the NDA and pledge NDAOWA’s continued support in building a stronger, more inclusive military community,” she said.
