Minister of State advocates adaptive curriculum
The federal government’s effort to put over 10 million children back to school has received quality manpower support as over 6,000 students yesterday (Saturday, November 23) graduated from the FCT College of Education, Zuba, as qualified teachers.
In her remarks at the combined 3rd convocation ceremony of the teachers’ college, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, called for a comprehensive and adaptive curriculum for the school and similar schools nationwide, encouraging the graduating students to apply their knowledge towards national development.
In a statement issued by her media aide, Austine Elemue, Mahmoud stressed the need for a globally compliant and locally relevant curriculum, so as to produce sound graduates that would be globally marketable, competitive and relevant.
Addressing the audience, she stated: “We must produce graduates who are marketable and globally competitive,” underscoring the need for education that meets both local and global standards.
Mahmoud encouraged the 6,068 graduates to apply their knowledge towards national development.
“You have a duty to contribute positively to society,” she urged.
While acknowledging ongoing challenges in educational infrastructure, she revealed that over N13 billion has been invested in renovations to improve learning environments.
Mahmoud commended the college for maintaining industrial peace between staff and student unions and reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting educational excellence.
“We will continue to back every sincere effort aimed at improving our educational standards,” she affirmed.
Provost of the College, Sule Mundi highlighted the college’s achievements, noting that it awarded Nigeria Certificates in Education to 4,625 regular and 1,443 part-time students.
He appealed for increased funding to introduce technical courses like automobile technology and electrical engineering, stating: “These programmes are essential for fostering self-reliance among our future teachers.”
The event featured the presentation of fellowship awards and certificates of excellence to top graduates, celebrating their academic achievements and commitment to community service.
The FCT Education Mandate Secretary, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, remarked that the convocation reflected the FCT administration’s dedication to elevating the college’s status in global education circles.
