In recognition of his contributions to the promotion of the Hausa language, culture, and the general welfare of Hausa diaspora populations, renowned academic and philanthropist Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo has been appointed as the Chancellor of the Hausa Community in Europe.
​The announcement was made on Sunday, September 13, 2026, during the grand celebration of International Hausa Day in Paris, France.
​The Emir of the Hausa Community in Europe, Alhaji Surajo Jankado, officially declared the appointment during the ceremony, describing the move as a major step toward fostering unity, educational growth, and cultural preservation among diaspora members.
​”This appointment marks a significant milestone toward strengthening our collective identity, unity, and development across the continent,” Emir Jankado stated during his address.
​Delivering his acceptance speech before traditional leaders, academics, and cultural advocates, Prof. Gwarzo expressed his gratitude for the honor and pledged to advocate for the community’s heritage. He emphasised the importance of cross-border cooperation and the role of education in keeping young diaspora generations rooted in their identity.
​”This responsibility provides a vital platform to preserve our heritage and ensure that younger generations living abroad remain firmly connected to their language, culture, and core values,” Prof. Gwarzo said.
​The event also drew praise from Nigerian government officials. Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, speaking through his official spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, lauded the selection as well-deserved.
​”Prof. Gwarzo’s contributions to education and community service, both at home in Nigeria and internationally, make this recognition truly meritorious,” Dawakin Tofa stated on behalf of the governor.
​The 2026 International Hausa Day celebration in Paris also featured the turbaning of notable dignitaries alongside Prof. Gwarzo, including Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Dr. Hajjo Sani; and Iyaloja Alaja Mufeedah Folashade Bola Tinubu.
