In a bid to prevent a repeat of the vote-splitting that secured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2023 victory, key Nigerian opposition parties under the umbrella of the G-100 coalition have proposed a legally binding, single four-year transition term for a consensus candidate to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
​The proposal was formally presented on Monday, August 31, 2026, during the Summit of Nigeria’s Opposition Political Parties, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
​The gathering brought together representatives and leaders from six major opposition political parties: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
​Delivering the keynote presentation, summit convener and former APC National Vice Chairman Mallam Salihu Moh. Lukman introduced the blueprint for a “Government of National Competence”.
Under this framework, the coalition’s single presidential flagbearer will commit to a mandatory four-year term focused strictly on executing a National Reset Programme without seeking re-election in 2031.
​”Nigerian politics has never suffered from a shortage of sincere promises. What it has suffered from is promises that nobody could enforce when the person who made them changed their mind,” declared Lukman. “Any agreement we reach must be written, witnessed, and carry real legal consequences.”
​Highlighting the math of the 2023 presidential poll, Lukman noted that divided opposition candidates polled over 13 million votes collectively, yet allowed the APC to win with under 9 million votes.
​Speaking on behalf of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus, Rep. Frederick Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa) urged party leaders to sacrifice personal ambitions for a unified ticket. Former lawmaker Hon. Sergius Ogun added that “the weakest among us can defeat this administration if we stand together.”
​The summit established five specialized working groups tasked with finalizing the coalition’s charter within four weeks ahead of a second national summit. Single-Term Transition Charter: Setting up the legal enforcement mechanism for the 4-year limit.
Establishing an objective framework to select a single presidential standard-bearer, Drafting the coalition’s primary economic and social policies and structuring three standing committees (Central Leadership, Legal, and Publicity).
​While prominent figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were absent from the opening session, coalition leaders confirmed that high-level consultations with all primary stakeholders remain ongoing before the second summit.
