The Ogun State Branch Controller of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Ayobami Suberu, has clarified that the withholding of some public school students’ results was due to a technical glitch, not because of the state’s indebtedness to the council.
This clarification came after WAEC withheld the results of 215,267 candidates when releasing the examination results on Monday.
Suberu, in a statement issued by Lekan Adeniran, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ogun State Governor, addressed the issue during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Suberu refuted an online media report that claimed the results of some public school students in Ogun State were withheld due to the state’s indebtedness to WAEC.
He emphasized that the Ogun State Government does not owe the examination body any money, labeling the report as both unbalanced and misleading.
He explained that the delay in releasing the affected students’ results was caused by a technical issue that is currently being resolved.
Suberu assured that communication is ongoing between the branch and the Head of the Test Administration Division of WAEC, with efforts underway to ensure the results are released before the close of business on Tuesday.
“I want to make it clear that Ogun State is not in debt to WAEC,” Suberu stated. “A senior official from the Ogun State Ministry of Education contacted me about the report, and I clarified that the claim of indebtedness is entirely false. The report is not only inaccurate but also mischievous.”
Suberu criticized the media outlet for publishing the story without seeking WAEC’s perspective, calling it unethical journalism.
“The truth is that the delay was due to a technical glitch, and we are working tirelessly to resolve it so the results can be released on Tuesday,” he said.
“We have been in contact with the Head of the Test Administration Division, and we are receiving positive updates on the situation.”
