Last year, some sheets of rock peeled off the Iyamapo Hill with thunderous sounds that brought geologists and other expert scientists to town to investigate the cause. It was concluded that it was weathering (Weathering is the deterioration of rocks, soils and minerals (as well as wood and artificial materials) through contact with water, atmospheric gases, sunlight, and biological organisms. It occurs in situ (on-site, with little or no movement), and so is distinct from erosion, which involves the transport of rocks and minerals by agents such as water, ice, snow, wind, waves and gravity).

As a result, people who built houses directly at the foot of the hill were asked to evacuate and relocate whilst those farming in the zone were advised to be vigilant as fault lines left behind will result in similar future incidents.

It was the predicted weathering action that happened yesterday on a larger scale. More is still expected in the near future.
